ABAKIR is responsible of enacting and promoting transboundary cooperation policy and actions for the protection and preservation of the water resources in the Lake Kivu and Rusizi River Basin
Thus, the mandate of ABAKIR, as defined by the Convention signed by the 3 member states, relates to the coordination of the implementation of the activities provided for by the convention, and to ensure and represent the common interests of the States in relation to the integrated management of water resources in the basin in a process of consultation with the relevant institutions of each Member State.
